Here's a secret on how to love winter in Quebec...You have to go play outside, no matter how old you are! Do you feel like moving, seeing people move? Come participate in the biggest outdoor winter event in Canada! There's something for everyone and it's as much for your family, friends, colleagues as for the athletes. Come celebrate winter, snow, ice, with us. The Pentathlon des neiges, this festive multi-sport event, takes place on the Plains of Abraham, in the heart of the city.

You can skate on a large refrigerated ice rink, snowshoe, cross-country ski, ride your fatbike and  run. Afterwards, you can go warm up in one of the many cafés or restaurants located a few minutes from the Plains, in the arts district. And if you've planned it well, you've also made arrangements to stay in one of the small, charming inns in the neighbourhood.

Fine art museum

Nearby the Auberge, walking through Quebec City, on the Grande-Allée, which borders the Plains of Abraham, we reach the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. What a sumptuous and impressive building! The new section recently inaugurated in June 2016 is called the Pavillon Pierre Lassonde. This pavilion is magnificent with its huge central staircase and glass hall, and what makes it particularly unique for a museum is that it lets in natural light. This year, the museum will host an exhibition on Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican modernism. Imagine how proud this mythical creative duo would be to have their paintings on display here! What a pleasure to receive this exhibition of Mexican art in the middle of February! It will warm our hearts.

Exposition Miro - MNBAQ

May 30th to September 8th 2019

Internationally-renowned painter and sculptor Joan Miró’s work is considered emblematic of the 20th century.

This major exhibit—the first exhibit on the artist in Quebec in more than 30 years—is a North American exclusive bringing together nearly 200 paintings, sculptures and paper works, including several large canvases. The works, selected from the collections of Miró’s descendants and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca (Spain), pays tribute to the artist’s mature period (1956 to 1981); during this time, he had settled in Mallorca and pursued his work with a great sense of freedom.

Inspired by the suggestions of his subjects and the expressive power of gesture, Miró produced several stunningly creative paintings. His work strongly suggests a universal appeal.

Firmly attached to the art and landscapes of his country, the artist developed a unique symbolic language, in which simple shapes spoke volumes. He celebrated the shapes of women, birds and starry nights, among others, through stunning ideograms that evoke unbridled fantasy.

His spectacular compositions, which are notably inspired by the American painting movement, pay tribute to an exceptional sense of experimentation and reveal a decidedly young and non-conformist Miró, to whom modernity was alive and well.

Escape in Québec to see the wonderful colors of Autumn

The season begins in the middle of September and it ends at the beginning of November.

Do you know what are the reasons of the color change?

The changing of the leaves each fall is due not so much to the cooler temperatures as to the decreased light resulting from shorter days. In the maple tree, the accumulation of sugar in the sap is what accounts for the brilliant red of the leaves, whose hue varies depending on the soil composition.

Quebec's only Changing of the Guard Ceremony
Daily from June 24 to Labour day (first Monday of September) at 10 a.m.

The Changing of the Guard takes place daily at 10 a.m. in summer on the Citadelle's parade grounds. The ceremony marks the arrival of new sentries to relieve those on duty at the garrison. It is a colourful military tradition and includes the inspection of the guard by the officers, the Regimental Band, and the regimental mascot Batisse the Goat.

A brief history

The Changing of the Guard has been a tradition at the Citadelle of Québec since 1928 except for a brief hiatus between 1939 and 1945. The ceremony features soldiers of the Royal 22e Régiment decked out in their scarlet regimental dress and bearskins as the "new guard" relieves the "old guard" after 24 hours of sentry duty at the Citadelle's entrance.

It is based on the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and is the only such ceremony in the province—a must-see experience for visitors to Quebec's capital!

Included with Citadelle and Museum admission.

Important to arrive 15 minutes before the ceremony starts.

Duration: 35 minutes

Organized and co-produced by Artemisia Group in Italy and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, this major retrospective of the work of Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) will receive its exclusive North American showing at the MNBAQ. Bonnard, a French painter, engraver and poster artist as well as a founding member of the Nabis avant-garde movement, is widely known for the originality of his brilliant compositions and his unusual handling of the paint.

The exhibition surveys the work of the painter from the perspective of one of his principal postulates: “The object is not to paint life, but to make painting come alive.” His untiring exploration of his immediate surroundings – indoor scenes, female nudes, gardens and landscapes in Normandy and the Côte d’Azur – and his extraordinary feel for chromatic harmonies and light, show that all his life Bonnard worked to transform reality.

This is the very first international exhibition to be magnificently showcased in the temporary exhibition galleries.

100 years of Sinatra

Hats off will be given to the great Frank Sinatra in this show paying tribute to his work. Alain Dumas, the official voice of this grand production, will be accompanied on stage by 10 musicians and a choir singer. He will sing the most famous crooner tunes of history in addition to telling his fascinating life including many often overlooked aspects of the public. This is why Alain Dumas, huge fan of Sinatra, is thrilling to revive the story of the man who single-handedly embodies the American dream.

Top 5: Best activities to do this Winter in Quebec City

''Bonhomme Carnaval'' shares you the best

When the city wears its big white coat, there's always an activity waiting for you ! Follow Bonhomme's top 5 of things to do this winter in Quebec City.

  1. Québec Winter Carnival: “Take a moment and stop by my majestic ice palace, located right in the heart of the city. Discover all the classic Winter Carnival events, like the ice canoe race, night parades, and famous snow sculpture competition. Pick up an Effigy for access to all the exclusive Carnival sites.”
  2. A stroll through Old-Quebec: “I adore walking through Old Québec when a light snow is falling, admiring the European style architecture and the magic of the lights in the Petit-Champlain District. I usually stop by a café for a cup of hot cocoa—even Bonhomme needs to warm up every now and then!”
  3. Snow Sliding: “There’s nothing better than sliding down a hill to make the most of winter! In Québec City, there’s even a toboggan run on the Dufferin Terrace, right in front of the Château Frontenac. You won’t believe the view! Hold on to your tuques—you’re in for a Bonhomme of a ride!”
  4. Hôtel de Glace (Ice Hotel): “Québec City’s ice hotel is simply the best ice-spot going! You’ll feel right at home—I know I do! Come for a cozy night’s stay or just a visit to admire the ice-tastic architecture. It’s out of this world! But hurry—it won’t make it to the summer!''
  5. Nature at your doorstep: “Dive head first into winter and enjoy Québec’s natural splendour with a day of skiing! There are several mountains just kilometres from downtown, all groomed up and ready to go. With snow, fresh air, and skiing of all sorts, there’s something for everyone!”

The Holy Door

Open until November 20th, 2016

What is a Holy Door? Come and discover it with our Holy Package.

As part of the 350th anniversary of Notre-Dame de Québec, to build a Holy Door in the Basilica-Cathedral is an exceptional privilege authorized by the Holy See to the first Catholic parish in North America, north of Mexico. This door is a symbol of communion with the universal Church.

The Holy Door is first of all a real door, pierced in the wall of the Chapel of the Sacred Heart on the north side of the Basilica Notre-Dame de Québec.

A Holy Door is a symbol of oneness with the Universal Church. It is also a symbol of convocation, an invitation to persons of good will to enter, whatever their religious denominations. It is a visual symbol of internal renewal, which begins with the willing desire to make peace with God, reconcile with your neighbors, restore in yourself everything that has been damaged in the past, and reshape your heart through conversion.

The Holy Door serves to remind today’s pilgrims of all those who came before us to bring the Catholic faith from France to “New France.” May it serve as a visible sign of faith for future generations.

Holy Door opening hours

In 2015 and 2016, the Holy Door is open from 8:45 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. until September 1, 2016, and from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. from September 2 to November 20, 2016. On November 20, 2016, the Holy Door will be closed and sealed. It will become an object of devotion for pilgrims and will open again only during Holy Years, about every 25 years.

Admission

There is no charge for passing through the Holy Door. However, offerings will be gratefully accepted for the upkeep of the Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral and its art and religious heritage.
